Update:

Andrew Coumo is trailing Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race but he is hoping to garner enough support among the Jewish community to get him over the finish line. The former New York Governor is courting this significant portion of the electorate by accusing Mamdani of stoking “the flames of hatred against Jewish people.”

This line of attack comes from Mamdani’s criticism of Israel’s offensive in Gaza against Hamas, which he has called a genocide out of concern for the rights of the Palestinian civilians. He has promised that as mayor he would focus on tackling antisemitism in the city, a growing concern for many in the Jewish community as the number of instances has been on the rise.

Why the some NYC Jewish voters support Mamdani

Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, has an advantage among the Jewish vote in the upcoming election. However, Mamdani has significant support, especially among voter under 44.

This is most likely comes down to his affordability agenda which is central to his campaign and a major concern for residents of one of the most expensive cities in the world. Some of the central planks of his campaign platform include rent control and universal child care.

While his criticism of Israel has turned off some Jewish voters, it has drawn others to his campaign, especially among the younger ones reports The New York Times. But it is not a clearcut issue, as some are supporting his bid to be the first mayor of Muslim faith in the Big Apple in spite of his positions on Israel and Palestine.

“Whatever anyone thinks about his positions on any international issues, they’re not the job description of the mayor,” said State Senator Liz Krueger, who is Jewish and has thrown her support behind Mamdani.
