Just under 7.5 million people in the U.S. are to get a check from the Social Security Administration (SAA) on October 1, in what is the opening payment on the agency’s distribution schedule for the month.
Who’s receiving a check from the SSA on Oct. 1?
The SSA is to send out the latest monthly check to beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) scheme.
SSI payments are always made on the first of each month, unless that day falls on a weekend or holiday.
Who receives SSI checks?
A program that currently has 7.406 million beneficiaries nationwide, SSI is for people who have little to no income or resources, and are over-65 or have a disability.
Unlike Social Security schemes such as retirement benefits, survivor pay and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), eligibility for SSI does not depend on recipients’ payment of Social Security taxes. It is a needs-based, rather than contribution-based, program.
How much money do SSI recipients get each month?
Per figures published by the SSA in August, SSI beneficiaries currently get $717.84 a month on average.
The SSA says the maximum monthly payment available to an individual SSI claimant is $967. Eligible couples can get up to $1,450 per month, while a checks for up to $484 can be paid out to what’s known as an ‘essential person’.
The agency also notes that some SSI beneficiaries may receive a supplementary payment from their state, depending on where they live. You can find out which states offer this extra money on the SSA website.
When are other Social Security payments made in October?

Most recipients of retirement, survivor and SSDI benefits will receive their check on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in October, depending on their date of birth:
2nd/3rd/4th Wednesday payment dates in full: Oct. 2025
Weds., Oct. 8: Recipients born on 1st to 10th of each month
Weds., Oct. 15: Recipients born on 11th to 20th of each month
Weds., Oct. 22: Recipients born on 21st to 31st of each month
This payment timeline does not apply to any Social Security beneficiaries who started claiming retirement, survivor or SSDI pay before May 1997.
These long-term recipients are due to get their money on Friday, October 3, regardless of their date of birth.
What if you get both SSI and regular Social Security benefits?
If you claim both SSI and any of the retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits, you are scheduled to receive the former on October 1 and the latter on October 3.
How does the SSA send out payments?
Most checks are now paid electronically. The SSA says under 1% of its beneficiaries continue to be mailed paper checks, as the agency seeks to go fully paperless.
The SSA offers benefits recipients two ways of receiving e-payments:
- Direct deposit
Americans can receive their money by direct deposit, by supplying the agency with their bank details. You can provide your account details using the “my Social Security” online tool.
- Special debit card
SSA beneficiaries can also have their money paid onto the Direct Express Card, a debit card for federal payments sent to people without a bank account.
