Update:

We all suffer in the heat of summer, and our animal friends are no different. You may notice that both dogs and cats may eat less, sleep more, and gulp down water like there’s no tomorrow.

While they’re very similar to us, there are plenty of differences, including what they’re allowed to eat. Humans love nothing more than some cool, juicy fruit in the midday sun, but one has to be careful when it comes to cats.

Before we get going, remember to always consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods to your cat’s diet, even those considered safe. Monitor for any signs of gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea, and discontinue the treat if any adverse reactions occur. By adhering to these guidelines, you can safely offer watermelon as an occasional, refreshing treat for your cat.

Let’s take watermelon as an example, as it’s my favourite fruit. While it is generally safe for cats when offered in moderation, such sweet treats should not be a staple of your cat’s diet. While not toxic, watermelon lacks essential nutrients that cats require, such as protein and taurine, and is high in carbohydrates. Experts say that watermelon is best avoided for cats with conditions like diabetes due to its high sugar content.

Instead, you can give your cat apples, apricots, bananas, blueberries, and even kiwis, all of which contain significant quantities of kitty-friendly nutrients that help keep your cat healthy and cool. Strawberries are good too, provided they don’t eat too many.

Even with the hearty goodness that fruit provides us humans, cats don’t necessarily prefer sweet foods and a piece of chicken or fish is generally their preferred option.
