Update:

Eurowings flight EW6886, operated by the German airline, was scheduled to depart from the Balearic Islands (Spain) on Wednesday, June 25th, at 9:15 a.m. Heading to Bavaria, Germany, the plane assigned to the route experienced an incident before takeoff.

According to a spokesperson for the airline speaking to Merkur.de, the flight from Palma de Mallorca to Munich “had to be canceled at short notice yesterday morning due to a technical fault that occurred during taxiing.”

An emergency stop

Once the boarding gate was closed and all passengers were seated, the captain and co-pilot began taxiing the plane out of the country. During the few minutes of the taxiing phase—when the aircraft moves along the runway to gain speed in preparation for takeoff—one of the pilots noticed something unusual.

It was a technical issue with the aircraft, a warning that prevented the flight from proceeding safely. Seconds before takeoff, the pilot slammed on the brakes, causing tension and panic among the passengers. The Airbus came to an immediate stop, and the flight attendants evacuated the travelers.

Passenger rebooking

After waiting at the airport, Eurowings, without providing exact details about the fault that caused the incident, began rebooking passengers on other flights so they could reach their destination as soon as possible.

One passenger, interviewed by Mallorca Zeitung, the first newspaper to report on the incident, explained that the pilot made an “emergency stop” just before takeoff, abruptly halting the plane and causing some commotion among the other passengers.

The interviewee said he was rebooked on another Eurowings flight to Nuremberg and from there took a train to Munich. The day after the incident, the plane stationed at Mallorca Airport was able to fly back to Munich in the morning. Eurowings has apologized for the incident.
