Reese’s or Snickers? The best Halloween candy depends on where you live

There’s no better way to get your house pranked on Halloween than being stingy with the candy you hand out or the wrong kind. What’s popular where you live?

Update:

There is still a little time before trick-or-treaters will be visiting doorsteps across the nation, although you could be fooled with some of the spooky Halloween displays already catching people’s attention. The annual tradition sees flocks of kids descend on neighborhoods seeking to fill their sacks and buckets with candy.

But beware of handing out the wrong kinds of candy or being stingy with the amount, it could result in the kids carrying out a prank implied in the threat of a ‘trick’. If you haven’t stocked up on treats just yet and are looking to find out what is popular where you live, well then you are in luck.

Door Dash has compiled data from Halloween candy orders to make a list of what are the favorites in each state.

A surprising trend according to Door Dash is that nostalgic 90s candies are making a comeback like Baby Bottle Pops and Dum-Dums. Sales of “the ultimate grandma candy,” Strawberry Bon Bons, were up 600% last year.

Raisins, once the bane of trick-or-treaters, have been on more and more shopping lists. Also more people are purchasing salty treats like crackers and pretzels to give out on Halloween. Sales of premium chocolate treats have risen as well.

“What might have once been written off as ‘cringe’ by younger generations is now being embraced as feel-good nostalgia,” said Cristen Milliner, Consumer Trends Expert at DoorDash.

But, as you may have guessed, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are still the treat supreme. Rounding out the top five are M&M’s, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar, Snickers and Skittles.

However, while not in the top ten of candies ordered during the month of October last year, Door Dash says that they’ve put Hershey’s Cookies ‘N’ Crème as one of their top treats for 2025 based on fall orders.

The following is the most popular candy in each state according to Door Dash based on last year’s sales in the run-up to Halloween:

Pranks are on the decline

Homeowners will be happy to know that the delivery service saw a dip in orders for eggs and toilet paper, typical favorites for pranksters, ahead of last Halloween.

“Even Halloween pranks tell a story about the times,” said Milliner, explaining, “eggs and toilet paper, once a rite of passage for mischief during spooky season, are dipping as prices rise, making it harder to pull from the pantry without parents noticing.”

The good news for trick-or-treaters is that Door Dash’s data shows that “families are putting their dollars toward getting more treats,” she added.
