In another firm departure from diplomatic nuance, Pope Leo XIV sent out a sharp criticism of how migrants are being held in the United States under the policy direction of Donald Trump and the broader MAGA movement.

Speaking from his lush summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, 25 miles southeast of Rome, the pontiff called for “deep reflection” on the human rights of detainees, individuals who, he noted, often arrived quietly before being swept up by Trump’s reckless and racist immigration enforcement.

He said that “many people who have lived for years and years and years, never causing problems, have been deeply affected by what is going on right now”.

“I think there is a deep reflection that needs to be made”

“The authorities must allow pastoral workers to assist with the needs of these people. Many times they have been separated from their families and no one knows what happens,” he added.

The Pope was responding to a barrage of questions regarding the hot topics of today, including Venezuela and a lack of a ceasefire in occupied Palestine, yet chose to focus his frustrations on domestic U.S. immigration enforcement.

Leo made clear during the questioning that scripture tells of the question that would be posed at the end of the world: “How did you receive the foreigner, did you receive him and welcome him, or not? I think there is a deep reflection that needs to be made about what is happening.”

When questioned about violence by illegal Israeli settlers in the West Bank, the Pope said that the situation surrounding settlements is “complicated.” He did admit that “Israel has often said one thing and then acted differently,” before urging all sides to seek “justice for every community involved.”
