October Harvest Moon: This is when you can see the first supermoon of 2025
The Hunter’s Moon will shine bigger and brighter than usual, kicking off a rare trio of autumn supermoons this October.

The first supermoon of 2025 will rise in dazzling style this week. Known as the October Harvest Moon – and often called the Hunter’s Moon – it will reach peak illumination on Tuesday, October 7, according to NASA.
Why is Hunter’s Moon so large and bright?
Because the Moon will be at its nearest point to Earth in its orbit, it will appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon. NASA notes that this event begins a rare run of three consecutive supermoons, making October’s night sky especially striking for stargazers.
Why is it called Hunter’s Moon?
The Hunter’s Moon traditionally followed the harvest period, lighting fields for hunters as animals came out to forage after crops were cleared. As old stories go, early farmers and Native American tribes relied on its glow to prepare for the cold months ahead.
Also called the Sanguine or Blood Moon, it takes its name either from the hunting season or from autumn’s deep red hues that tint the horizon. Whatever the origin, this October spectacle offers a reminder of the rhythms that once guided human life… so make sure you get a glimpse.
