Ever wondered what makes someone truly “cool”? According to a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, researchers from several universities have pinpointed the key traits that define “coolness” - and they apply across international borders.

How did the coolness study work?

The study surveyed nearly 6,000 people across 12 countries, asking them to think of someone in their everyday life they considered “cool,” “uncool,”, “good” or “not good.”

Participants then described that person’s personality using two well-established psychological tools: the Big Five personality traits model and the Portrait Values Questionnaire.

Coolness not necessarily positive

The results? Being “cool” isn’t the same as being “good.” While “good” people were described as conforming, traditional, secure, warm, agreeable, universalistic, conscientious and calm, “cool” individuals had a more rebellious edge.

Co-author Caleb Warren explains that “cool” people tend to be admired or liked, but they also exhibit traits that don’t always align with moral goodness - so being “cool” isn’t always seen as purely positive.

So, what are the six traits that define a “cool” person? According to the study, they are:

  • Extroverted
  • Hedonistic
  • Powerful
  • Adventurous
  • Open to new things
  • Autonomous

This pattern is stable across countries, which suggests that the meaning of cool has crystallized on a similar set of values and traits around the globe,” researchers said.

“We’re born with those attributes”

In other words, coolness is about charisma, confidence and a willingness to break the mold. But don’t expect to learn how to be cool from a YouTube tutorial - researchers emphasize that these traits are deeply rooted in personality and tend to remain stable over time.

We’re born with those attributes,” co-author Todd Pezzutti told an interview with CNN. “Five of those attributes are personality traits, and personality traits tend to be fairly stable.”
