Huge flames in the Chevron fire at the largest oil refinery in production on the West Coast: “could affect air quality”
A large fire at the Chevron facility has been confirmed by Gavin Newsom, governor of California.

A huge fire has broken out at a Chevron oil refinery in Southern California, with flames visible all across the region.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office confirmed that the fire had erupted in El Segundo: “Our office is coordinating in real time with local and state agencies to protect the surrounding community and ensure public safety,” he said on Twitter.
Camera footage taken from a helicopter shows flames coming from two of the stacks and one other area at the facility, which is the largest producing on the west coast.
There was no order of evacuation for local residents.
Speaking to NBC, one resident said “I saw this thing just go up. I never, ever fear anything. This — I got in panic mode when I saw it. I was literally in panic mode.”
LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell told KCAL/KCBS that the fire may be likely to affect air quality. However, fears seem to have been calmed after CBS quoted Nahal Mogharabi, assistant deputy of communications for AQMD, who said: “We’re currently not seeing any elevated of particulate matter or air toxins. That may change as the smoke settles this evening.”
