Life has its ups and downs. As well as all the good things that happen, we all suffer traumatic moments, bad luck, distress, suffering and loss. And it’s difficult not to feel resentment, bitterness or anger when things go wrong.

Bitter people cling to negativity, they cannot move on from their disappointments and disagreements. And that breeds stress which in turn, impacts not only their psychological well-being but also their physical health. High stress levels causes and increase in heart rate and blood pressure.

Tell-tale signs of a bitter person

  1. They hold a grudge.
  2. They complain regularly.
  3. They don’t recognize the good in their life.
  4. They wish ill on those who have done them harm.
  5. They struggle to forgive.
  6. They experience jealousy.
  7. They are likely cynical.
  8. They are quick to appoint blame.
  9. They see positive people as toxic.
  10. They make sweeping statements.

What did the ancient philosophers say about well-being?

Many psychologists believe that the teachings of ancient philosophers such as Confucius, Socrates and Plato can guide us to what is important in life, and help us to see things in a different light so that we don’t descend into a mire of bitterness and resentment.

  1. Be decent and live in peace and harmony.
  2. Revere parents and be kind to elders.
  3. Find humanity within and cherish the heart.
  4. Live with honesty and trustworthiness.
  5. Be respectful of everyone.
  6. Do the right thing.
  7. Work hard.
  8. Contemplate life over seeking material wealth and power.
  9. Help others, especially those in need.
