Google Maps has become an essential travel companion, to the point that most of us can’t quite remember how we ever got around without it. But beyond its basic navigation functions, the app also includes a handy feature that many users don’t know about, one that can make finding your parked car a whole lot easier.
The all-too-common parking problem
We’ve all done it. You find a parking spot, hop out of the car, and head off without taking note of exactly where you left it. Hours later, you’re wandering around the lot or down unfamiliar streets, trying to remember which corner or level you parked on. It’s an easy mistake to make, especially in sprawling mall garages or busy downtown areas you don’t know well.
Google Maps can remember for you
If you use Google Maps to its full potential, however, this frustrating situation can be avoided completely.
You’re probably familiar with the small blue dot that marks your current location in the app. When you tap on that dot, several options appear under “Your Location.” If you scroll to the right, you’ll see one labeled “Save parking” with a “P” icon next to it.
How to use the parking feature
Tap “Save parking,” and Google Maps will automatically store the exact address of where you left your car. You can even add notes - such as “Level 3, Row B” or “Next to the exit” - and set a timer to remind you when your parking meter is about to expire.
If you can’t spot the parking icon later, don’t worry. The saved location appears at the top of your Google Maps search bar, meaning you can easily pull up directions to your car from wherever you are.
A simple trick that saves time
It’s a small feature, but one that can make travel, errands, and day trips much less stressful. The next time you park somewhere unfamiliar, let Google Maps handle the remembering for you.
