She buys a painting at a secondhand store and finds something unexpected: “There was a hidden surprise”
Gabrielle Rose found a family photograph from the 1970s behind her painting. Now she’s searching for who it belongs to.

Second-hand shopping is on the rise. In the United States, it has grown by 143% since 2018, as more people search for hidden gems among everyday items. Danielle Rose was one of these treasure hunters—but what she discovered went far beyond a valuable find.
Rose purchased a striking painting of a horse. At first, it seemed like a typical purchase, but she was astonished when she opened the frame. So intrigued was she that she uploaded a video to her TikTok account, hoping her followers could help. Inside, she found a family photograph from the 1970s and is now trying to locate the people in it.
“My thrift purchase had a hidden surprise. I love knowing the history behind the pieces I keep, and I’m so excited to have found this family portrait tucked behind the art I bought. Someone, please tell me you know them—I want to return your portrait!” Gabrielle said.
In the comments, people have rallied to support her and help identify the family. Searches have already started in Nebraska, California, and Oregon, but so far, the family has not been found.
