Update:

Former Trump White House attorney Ty Cobb hit the air waves on Sunday to speak out about the unprecedented move by the Department of Justice in going forward with a direct request from Donald Trump to prosecute James Comey, former FBI director who Trump fired in his first term.

The indictment came just days after a low-level lawyer on Trump’s legal team, turned White House aide, Lindsey Halligan, was appointed to the position of interim US attorney of Eastern Virginia. She replaced Trump’s previous pick for the position, Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure for not bringing charges against Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Prosecutors and investigators advised against trying to indict Comey in an internal memo reported ABC News, saying that they could find no probable cause and they don’t have sufficient evidence for such a move.

“This is really authoritarianism”

“This is just juvenile vengeance,” Cobb said of Trump’s insistence that the Justice Department go after his enemies speaking on the Alex Witt Reports. “If you’ve offended Trump in the past, you have vulnerability. He will target you and he will try to destroy you.”

“I think we should be scared to death,” he continued when asked about how fast the justice system is being turned against Americans. He noted that “the Justice Department, in the ordinary course of traditional processes, investigated and concluded that there was insufficient evidence to justify a criminal prosecution.”

But because he was an enemy of the president and because the president ordered his feckless attorney general to prosecute him now, that should scare us all,” he emphasized.

“Historically, that’s not America. This isn’t America as we’ve known it,” Cobb continued. “This is really authoritarianism, and it should scare everybody.”

Ty Cobb says Americans need to tell Trump “Stop!”

When Cobb was asked what Republicans who are cheering Trump on are missing, he responded, “I think, that is such a hard question.”

“Whether they are missing something, whether the Kool-Aid is just so strong that they just can’t see the way liberty is eroding in the United States,” he said. “Whether it’s the First Amendment freedoms, or it’s just the general protections that the Constitution guarantees all citizens… But it is shocking”

“These are more than one or two deviations from the norms; these are 180 degrees from the norm and people need to wake up,” Cobb explained. He went on to detail other things that Trump is doing like putting American soldiers on the streets of US cities.

He doesn’t think that this will be an issue for the midterm elections but reckons that “2028 is something that everybody should be focused on. I think a lot of these things are practice exercises.

However, Cobb thinks that Trump’s “main focus is on targeting domestic enemies.”

“People need to wake up to that,” he emphasized. “That takes me to the point that really does scare me the most, which is how few Americans seem to appreciate how desperate the times we are in right now. And the necessity of stepping up and saying ‘Stop!’
