Update:

Lawrence Summers has said he will pause all public commitments after the release of extensive correspondence between himself and Jeffrey Epstein, a trove made public by House Republicans last week. The former Harvard president, who was appointed to senior roles in multiple administrations – and was one of those singled out by Donald Trump in his recent u-turn on more information being released – said he intends to repair personal relationships while continuing to teach at the university.

Messages reveal Summers’ unusual reliance on Epstein

As reported by The Crimson, hundreds of exchanges show Summers kept in close contact with Epstein until the eve of Epstein’s 2019 arrest. The messages included discussions about Summers’ pursuit of a romantic relationship with a younger economist, as well as moments in which Epstein referred to himself as Summers’ “wing man.”

The disclosures triggered swift reaction on Monday, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren urging Harvard to sever ties. The Justice Department has opened a preliminary inquiry into Epstein’s network of high-profile contacts.

Institutions distance themselves from Summers

Summers resigned from advisory and fellowship roles at Yale’s Budget Lab and the Center for American Progress, and his profile vanished from Yale’s website. Harvard confirmed he will retain his University Professor title and continue directing a research center.
