Dr. Susan Massick from Ohio State University reveals the risks of hard water: “It can wreak havoc on your skin”

Hard water is rich in calcium and magnesium and while it’s completely safe to drink or bathe in, hard water may make your hair appear dull.

Update:

Hard water isn’t good for skin or hair primarily because of its high concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals. These minerals create two main problems according to Dr. Susan Massick, an associate professor of dermatology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Hard water minerals react with the fatty acids in soaps and shampoos, forming an insoluble film known as soap scum. This residue is difficult to rinse away completely.

Calcium and magnesium ions cling to the skin and hair, leaving a sticky, chalky buildup.

The mineral buildup on your hair and scalp causes several issues:

Dryness and Dullness: The mineral film prevents moisture from penetrating the hair shaft, stripping away natural oils, and leaving hair dry, brittle, and looking dull or lifeless.

Frizz and Breakage: The rough, mineral-coated surface of the hair makes it prone to tangling, frizziness, and ultimately, breakage and thinning.

Scalp Issues: Mineral deposits on the scalp can clog hair follicles and interfere with the scalp’s natural oils, leading to a dry, flaky, and itchy scalp.

Color Fading: Hard water minerals can also react with chemicals in hair dye, causing color-treated hair to fade faster or develop an unwanted brassiness or green tint.

Effects on Skin

Hard water damages the skin by compromising its natural protective barrier as the persistent film of soap scum and mineral residue left on the skin can disrupt its natural barrier, leading to dryness, itchiness, and general irritation.

The leftover soap scum and minerals can clog pores, potentially contributing to acne breakouts.

For people with sensitive skin or existing conditions like eczema or psoriasis, hard water can make symptoms significantly worse.

The mineral residue can also prevent moisturizers, lotions, and serums from being properly absorbed, reducing their effectiveness.
