City of the future emerges in the Mediterranean aiming to attract tourists from European hotspots
A flagship project designed to change the perception of the Egyptian coast and attract international investment

Egypt has embarked on an ambitious project to redefine its tourism landscape. New Alamein, a megacity on the Mediterranean coast, has been designed as a modern and sustainable metropolis intended to rival popular holiday destinations such as Greece, Italy, and Spain.
The project, which cost $183 million, aims to become the jewel of the Mediterranean coast and a symbol of Egyptian modernity. Stretching for about 60 kilometres along the northern coast in the Marsa Matrouh Governorate, the city lies on the Alexandria–Matrouh International Highway, according to the Greek Reporter.
New Alamein is conceived as an open city where tourists and residents can share the same modern urban environment, marking a departure from the area’s typical landscape of private resort enclaves.

The city is also intended to ease population pressure on Cairo and is projected to accommodate around three million people once completed. The first phase, already underway, includes approximately 400,000 residents.
According to Egyptian authorities, New Alamein will be a game-changer and a model for fourth-generation urban development, integrating modern technologies, green infrastructure, and smart public transport systems.
The project will include an international tourism district with modern hotels and beaches, a historical and archaeological zone celebrating the cultural heritage of the El Alamein area—famous for its Second World War battles—and an urban residential area designed for locals and investors alike.
The city is expected to be known for its white sandy beaches, deep blue waters, and mild Mediterranean climate. Its tourism infrastructure will feature office buildings, shopping centres, universities, and a “City of Culture and the Arts,” complete with a Roman theatre, production studios, an opera house, and a cinema. More than 30 developers have already received permits to build over 30,000 hotel rooms.
