The off-year elections in New Jersey and Virginia are in their final stretch with voters set to cast their ballots on Tuesday 4 November. To help drum up support for his party, Barack Obama came out to stump for the Democratic candidates headlining rallies Norfolk and Newark.

The former US president criticized Donald Trump and Republican policies. “There is absolutely no evidence Republicans’ policies have made life better for you,” Obama told the audiences throwing his support behind Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA analyst who represented Virginia for three terms in Congress from 2019 to 2025 and New Jersey US representative Mikie Sherrill.

The charismatic former president delivered his message to rally goers with his customary mix of seriousness on the topic at hand mixed with humor. He wasted no time taking the Trump administration to task starting off his spiel: “Let’s face it. Our country and our politics are in a pretty dark place right now.”

“It is hard to know where to start. Every day, this White House offers up a fresh batch of lawlessness and recklessness and mean spiritedness and just plain craziness,” he continued.

He listed off examples like persecuting political opponents using the Justice Department stacked with loyalists that have replaced career prosecutors Trump fired. Demanding the government pay him millions for legal fees he spent defending himself for his violations of the law.

Obama slammed Trump for firing decorated military officers “because he thinks they might be more loyal to the constitution than they are to him.” He blasted the deployment of the National Guard to US cities which Trump “claimed to be stopping crime waves that don’t actually exist.”

As well, Obama criticized Trump’s masked immigration agents “in unmarked vans and grabbing people off the streets including US citizens” and doing so on the sole suspicion “they don’t look like real Americans.”

He knocked Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr opposing proven science and then pedaling ”quack medicine.” Obama pointed out the absurdity of Trump’s top aide, Stephen Miller, “who calls Democrats, the whole Democratic party domestic extremists.”

He lambasted Trump firing a labor economist for “accurately reporting bad job numbers that Trump didn’t like.”

“It’s like every day is Halloween, except it’s all tricks and no treats,” he quipped. “Here’s the thing… it’s not as if we did not see some of this coming.”

“I’ll admit, it’s worse than even I expected; but I did warn you,” he added. “And you know what Donald Trump warned you too. He told you what he was like and how he was going to act.
