Bank of America will close all branches on October 13: here’s why they’re shutting down for 24 hours
Customers in the United States should plan ahead, as in-person banking won’t be available for a full day.

Bank of America will close all its branches across the United States on Monday, October 13, in observance of Columbus Day. The holiday, which falls on the second Monday of October, is also known in some communities as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Like most major banks, Bank of America follows the Federal Reserve holiday schedule. On each of the 11 federal holidays, banks suspend in-person services and employees receive a paid day off. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead for any transactions that require visiting a branch.
Which banks will be closed
Alongside Bank of America, other major institutions including Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, U.S. Bank, Capital One, Citizens Bank, Santander, BBVA Compass, and SunTrust Bank will also be closed for the day.
While branch locations will shut their doors, digital and mobile banking services, as well as ATMs, will continue to operate as usual.
Upcoming Bank Holidays in 2025
Of the 11 federal holidays each year, some fall on specific dates while others shift depending on the calendar. When a holiday lands on a Saturday, it’s observed the preceding Friday; if it falls on a Sunday, it’s observed the following Monday.
Federal holidays already observed in 2025 include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Here are the remaining federal holidays in 2025 when most banks, including Bank of America, will close:
- Veterans Day: Tuesday, November 11
Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 27
Christmas Day: Thursday, December 25

What else closes on Columbus Day
Because Columbus Day is a federal holiday, all government offices will be closed, and federal employees will have the day off.
Most banks, post offices, stock exchanges, and public schools will also close for the day. However, many pharmacies, grocery stores, and restaurants will remain open, often operating on normal or slightly reduced hours.
