Bank customer ‘dumped’ for no reason after 30 years: “We are no longer in a position to continue”

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) broke with Tomas Nassab for no apparent reason.

Tomas Nassab has had both his heart and his wallet broken. After 30 years of back and forth, his bank — the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) — has decided to end the relationship. And as with many long-term relationships, the decision came, according to the bank’s statement to CTV News, only after “a thorough analysis of the circumstances.”

The problem? Nassab still doesn’t know why the breakup happened. When he tried to move money from his investments, he couldn’t get personal assistance. Frustrated, he filed several complaints — first to “a couple of branch managers,” then to “a general community manager.” The response was swift and brutal: “Within seven days, they told me all my accounts were going to be closed.”

A few days later, CTV News confirmed the split in writing. “We are no longer able to continue our banking relationship with you,” RBC told him — and as if evicting a roommate, the bank gave Nassab 30 days to close his accounts and withdraw his funds.

“I’m not part of any criminal network”

But Nassab wasn’t ready to let go. “There’s no reason for this,” he told the outlet, insisting he had nothing to hide. “I’m not part of any criminal network. I’m not involved in fraud.”

RBC, for its part, defended its decision. “Both the client and the bank can choose to end a banking relationship,” the bank said in a statement. “RBC makes this decision only after a thorough analysis of the circumstances.” The bank also emphasized that it had given Nassab time to adjust, saying, “If the bank decides to end the banking relationship, we work with the client during the transition period and give them time to seek alternative banking options.”

Still, Nassab feels blindsided — a loyal customer cast aside without reason after decades of commitment. “Customer service is becoming so poor that even if you make reasonable complaints, they’re willing to take that action as a stopgap measure to get rid of you,” he said.
