Arguing about the thermostat settings at home or at work? Here is the best temperature for your mental performance
Research shows the right indoor temperature doesn’t just feel good, it can actually make you happier and more productive.

“Is it just me, or is it really hot/cold in here?” is a question most of us have asked at some point. Maybe you add an extra layer, take one off, turn up the heater, or open a window. But whether you’re too hot or too cold, science says there’s an ideal indoor temperature we should all aim for.
What counts as room temperature?
There’s no single scientific definition of “room temperature,” although most experts agree it falls somewhere between 68ºF (20ºC) and 72ºF (22.2ºC). Research suggests, however, that the true sweet spot lies toward the upper end of that range.
The scientifically proven sweet spot
Environmental psychologist Sally Agustin wrote in Psychology Today that multiple studies have found 70 to 72ºF (21.1 to 22.2ºC) to be the most comfortable and beneficial range.
Our brains have been shown to function better at that temperature, and people tend to be in their best moods when the thermostat is set there. Comfort, focus, and happiness all seem to flourish together at that temperature.
Of course, comfort levels can differ slightly from person to person, depending on factors like where you’re from and what temperature you’re used to. But overall, experts agree that 70 to 72ºF is the ideal range for most people.
Science settles the thermostat debate
So, the next time you find yourself arguing at home or at work about how high or low to set the thermostat, remember what science says: that range isn’t just comfortable, it’s best for both your brain and your happiness.
