An American family moves to Spain and explains why they found the American dream: “It was right in front of me.”
More and more Americans are considering moving abroad. One family shares how Spain offered them security and well-being.

After the financial crash of 2008 wiped out nearly everything they had, one American couple made a bold move: they packed up and left the U.S. in search of a better life. Their journey led them to Spain, where they discovered something they hadn’t felt in years—stability, affordability, and a sense of community.
Since arriving in 2016, the couple has lived in several countries while running a small online business. Today, they’ve settled into a cozy home in Spain with their 12-year-old daughter, embracing a lifestyle they say was out of reach back in the States.
Affordable healthcare, real peace of mind
One of the biggest motivators for their move was the cost of essential services—especially healthcare. In Spain, they’ve found medical care to be dramatically more affordable. Doctor visits and emergency services come at a fraction of what they used to pay in the U.S., giving them peace of mind without the financial strain.
Education without the debt
Their daughter now has access to a public university system where tuition costs are far lower than in California. That means she can pursue higher education without the crushing student debt that burdens so many American families.
Combined with Spain’s healthcare system, this allows the parents to save for retirement and offer their child a more secure future.
Housing that doesn’t break the bank
When it comes to housing, the difference is just as stark. The couple found apartments ranging from around $530/month for a one-bedroom to roughly $1,060/month for a three-bedroom—far more affordable than what they faced in Los Angeles. The pandemic made them realize the importance of green space, and in Spain, they were finally able to afford a home with a yard.
Trade-offs—and what makes it worth it
Of course, life abroad isn’t perfect. They acknowledge that salaries are generally lower and taxes higher than in the U.S. But for them, the trade-off is worth it. What they’ve gained—quality of life, financial security, and a tight-knit community—far outweighs what they left behind.
Though they still miss American culture, they say Spain has given them something they never expected: a version of the American Dream, re-imagined through a European lens. And for this family, that dream feels more real than ever.
