Update:

Frequent travelers between Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Eugene, Oregon (EUG) have been left disappointed after American Airlines announced it has permanently canceled flights between the two airports, effective immediately.

The last flight on the route took place on August 5. The route, first established in 2021, initially operated year-round before switching to seasonal service and now being discontinued.

Airline cites network evaluation

“As part of a continuous evaluation of our network, American has made the difficult decision to discontinue service between Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) and Eugene, Oregon (EUG),” the airline said in a statement. “We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any inconvenience.”

Although the airline did not specify the reason, the cancellation is likely due to low demand making the route unprofitable. Passengers who have booked future flights on the DFW-EUG route will be offered full refunds or alternative flight options.

Recent operational disruptions

The cancellation comes after a challenging weekend for American Airlines, which faced multiple disruptions across its network.

The Federal Aviation Administration stopped flights from leaving Dallas-Fort Worth and Dallas Love Field airports over the weekend due to a widespread phone and internet outage.

As a result, American Airlines canceled 200 flights, with another 500 delayed, accounting for roughly a quarter of the company’s weekend schedule.

In a separate incident, an AA flight from London to Philadelphia was forced to return to Heathrow Airport because of a technical issue affecting its wing flaps. The flight was canceled after carrying 20,000 pounds of fuel.

Additionally, some flights out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Miami International Airport were disrupted by Storm Amy, which caused significant damage in parts of Northern and Western Europe.

To make matters even worse, a suspected stowaway was recently found dead in the landing gear compartment of an American Airlines plane at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

AA lagging behind competitors

While remaining of the United States’ major airlines, American Airlines is perceived as lagging behind Delta and United Airlines in certain areas, including not offering the same level of premium experience.
