A popular Italian chef is asked which European country has the best food, and his answer will get people talking
Massimo Capra highlights southern Europe’s culinary traditions but ultimately crowns one nation as the continent’s top foodie destination.

The latest to weigh in is Italian-born chef Massimo Capra, who shared his take in a video on TikTok, where he has nearly half a million followers. “It’s hard to say,” he admitted before offering his carefully considered answer.
Southern Europe takes the culinary crown
Capra pointed to four standout countries, all in southern Europe: Italy, Spain, France and Greece. “Italy has an incredible way of thinking about food, just like Spain, France and Greece,” he said.
He praised the region’s focus on organic, locally sourced ingredients and the meticulous care put into cultivation and harvesting. “What they eat in one village is grown right there. Then you go to another village and they may have the same recipe, but it’s not quite the same,” Capra explained.
One nation stands above the rest
While acknowledging that southern Europe as a whole leads the way, Capra ultimately followed his heart. “If I have to pick one country, you know, my heart is in Italy,” he said with a smile.

Backlash over Portugal snub
Capra’s choice didn’t sit well with everyone. Some followers were quick to point out that Portugal didn’t even get a mention. Others fired back with biting comments like, “Italy has pasta. The rest of Europe has food.”
The debate shows no signs of cooling, but Capra is standing by his pick. For him, when it comes to food worth traveling for, southern Europe, and especially Italy, still sets the gold standard.
