Update:

No one ever really knows what to expect from a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame night, but this year’s edition, taking over Los Angeles on November 8, might be the wildest mix yet. Where else would Cher, Soundgarden, OutKast and Cyndi Lauper share a bill with Donald Glover, Chappell Roan and Missy Elliott? Before we get to the rest, here’s a look at last year’s...

Rock and Roll royalty

The night’s pairings seem built for viral moments, handy given it’ll be lived by many on social media. Lauper will be inducted by rising pop provocateur Chappell Roan, who’ll join Avril Lavigne for a duet in her honor. I mean, girls just want to have fun, right? Soundgarden’s tribute will tread back into its, ahem, roots, with a Seattle all-star lineup – Heart’s Nancy Wilson, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell and the Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen – reuniting grunge’s old guard.

A tale of two cities: Atlanta and Seattle

If Seattle brings the guitars, Atlanta brings the groove. Donald Glover will induct OutKast, and Janelle Monáe with Killer Mike are expected to keep the funk alive. David Letterman, never far from the Rock Hall spotlight, will take a quieter turn to salute his late friend Warren Zevon, one of this year’s posthumous honorees, alongside soul man Thom Bell.

Who else will perform?

In case you had heard otherwise, The White Stripes won’t reunite (Meg White is skipping the night), and Bad Company’s Paul Rodgers will sit out due to health concerns, though drummer Simon Kirke will represent the group.

But the guest list more than compensates: Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Elton John, Jim Carrey, Missy Elliott, and the Killers are all slated to appear, joined by cameos from Bryan Adams, En Vogue, Flea, Iggy Pop, Questlove, and Mick Fleetwood.
