The legendary actress who tore apart the ‘Queen of Pop’: “Madonna is a movie killer”

Madonna may be the undisputed Queen of Pop, but her acting career has always sparked debate. With over four decades of chart-topping hits, sold-out stadium tours, and record-breaking album sales, she’s cemented her place as a global music icon. Yet her film work—especially her role as Eva Perón in Evita—continues to divide critics and fans alike.

While Evita earned Madonna a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and helped the film snag an Oscar for Best Original Song (“You Must Love Me” by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber), not everyone was impressed—especially Broadway legend Patti LuPone.

LuPone, a titan of American theater with three Tony Awards and two Olivier Awards to her name, originated the role of Eva Perón on Broadway in 1979. When asked about Madonna’s portrayal during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, LuPone didn’t hold back: “I thought it was a piece of crap,” she said bluntly.

“Madonna is a movie killer,” LuPone continued. “She has dead eyes. She can’t act her way out of a paper bag. She shouldn’t be in film or on stage. I saw her in a movie and on stage and thought, ‘Mmm… nope.’”

LuPone didn’t stop there. She added, “There are things you just shouldn’t do, and you have to admit it. Not everyone can do everything. Like that damn Kim Kardashian.”

Despite LuPone’s scathing critique, Evita remains one of Madonna’s most celebrated acting roles. The film is available to stream in the U.S. on platforms like Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.
