The actress says the movie’s message about survival and domestic abuse matters more than its disappointing earnings.

Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy’ biopic bombs at the box office: the actress insists she is “deeply proud” of the movie
Sydney Sweeney has publicly responded to the commercial failure of Christy, the biographical drama in which she portrays legendary boxer Christy Martin. The R-rated film earned just $1.3 million in its opening weekend despite being shown in more than 2,000 theaters across the United States – making it one of the biggest box office flops in recent memory.
On Instagram, the Euphoria star acknowledged the disappointing figures but stood firmly by the project’s significance. “I’m deeply proud of this film. We don’t always make art for the numbers – we make it for the impact,” she wrote. “And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life.”
Directed by David Michôd and co-starring Ben Foster, Merritt Wever and Katy O’Brian, the movie follows Christy Martin’s rise in the boxing world and the harrowing assassination attempt by her husband and trainer. The film has been praised for its emotional intensity and for Sweeney’s “moving, visceral performance.” Reflecting that praise, she added: “The movie represents survival, courage and hope.”
Sweeney went on to highlight the film’s message and the awareness it has generated around domestic violence: “Through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness about domestic abuse. Every person involved in this project believed Christy’s story could save lives. If this film helps even one woman take her first step toward safety, then we’ve succeeded.”
For now, Christy remains available only in US theaters, and given its weak box office performance, it’s unlikely to expand to international markets. Yet for Sweeney, the numbers aren’t what matter most – what counts is that Christy might inspire women facing domestic violence to seek help and change their lives forever.
