Update:

The California State Legislature voted to call a special election on November 4, giving voters the final say on whether the Golden State adopts a new map of congressional districts. “Scream” star Matthew Lillard is among the high-profile figures urging citizens to get out and vote on Tuesday.

If Proposition 50 is approved, the new boundaries would be used through the next three election cycles and could help Democrats gain up to five seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. That change could have a significant effect on the balance of power in Washington.

Response to a “Republican power grab”

The California Democratic Party describes Proposition 50 as “a direct response to a Republican power grab orchestrated by President Trump and state leaders in Texas, who redrew congressional district lines to gain five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

The party also claims the measure gives Californians an opportunity to “fight back against the Republican cuts to healthcare, the rising cost of living under tariffs, and the cruel abductions and forced removals of immigrants.

Lillard turns up the volume on politics

Appearing at Cinespia’s “Scream” Halloween screening on Friday night, Lillard surprised fans by diving into politics during his appearance.

The 55-year-old actor made it clear where he stands, encouraging Californians to vote in favor of the measure.Yes to 50. You have to vote. If you don’t vote, we are going down. So it’s on us. And if you don’t like that, I’m so not sorry,” he told the crowd.

“Fuck ICE”: Lillard’s fiery message

Lillard also had a strong message for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has been as much a protagonist during Trump’s second term as the president himself.

Fuck ICE,” Lillard ranted. “In this time, in this city, we need to lead with love. Do not forget that shit in this moment. Not to be political, but to be political as shit.”

Polls show support for Proposition 50

The latest polls indicate that between 55% and 60% of Californians are likely to vote in favor of Proposition 50.
