Russell Crowe’s incredible physical transformation after dramatic weight loss: “These are long-term changes”
The Oscar-winning actor surprised fans with a striking new look ahead of his latest film, marking a fresh chapter in his career.

Russell Crowe, the Oscar-winning actor best known for Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, The Insider, L.A. Confidential, Robin Hood and Master and Commander, has stunned fans with his latest physical transformation. The 61-year-old New Zealand-born star has shed nearly 60 pounds in just one year.
Crowe recently unveiled his new look while promoting his upcoming movie Nuremberg, in which he portrays Hermann Göring, the only top Nazi leader tried for war crimes after World War II. The actor said the changes are part of a broader effort to improve his health and approach the next stage of his career with renewed energy.
How Russell Crowe lost the weight
For years, Crowe had largely stopped paying attention to fitness. The days of his Gladiator-era physique were long behind him. But over the past year, the actor has overhauled his lifestyle and dropped from 280 pounds to around 220.
A major part of that change came from cutting back on alcohol. “I’m a big believer in having a drink,” Crowe said during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience while promoting Nuremberg. “It’s part of my cultural heritage and, as a working-class man, it’s my damn right, Joe,” he joked.
These days, though, he’s more selective. “As you get older, you start to learn certain things about your own limits,” he said. “I haven’t become a teetotaler, but if I decide to have a glass of wine with dinner, it’ll be a really good one. I try not to drink casually anymore, not just for the sake of it.”

Managing old injuries and focusing on longevity
Crowe also credits his transformation to how he’s treating the many injuries he’s accumulated throughout his long acting career. He’s been receiving injections to help with chronic shoulder and knee problems, which he says have reduced inflammation significantly.
“I think we’ve talked before about the number of old injuries I carry and the deep arthritis I have in my shoulders,” Crowe said. “But now, thanks to ultrasound scans, we can see that the bands of arthritis have shrunk, probably by 70 percent, and in one area of my right shoulder, by as much as 90 percent.”
Even with those improvements, Crowe knows his transformation isn’t complete. “What I want is for all these changes to become a long-term situation,” he said.

Russell Crowe’s role in ‘Nuremberg’
Crowe’s latest project, Nuremberg, hits theaters on November 14. The historical drama revisits the Allied trials held 80 years ago after the fall of the Nazi regime. The film follows American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, played by Rami Malek, who is assigned to evaluate the mental health of Nazi prisoners and determine if they are fit to stand trial.
Before long, Kelley finds himself in a tense psychological duel with Hermann Göring, played by Crowe, Hitler’s right-hand man and one of the most feared figures of the 20th century.
