Matthew McConaughey makes his stance clear on a ‘True Detective’ reunion with Woody Harrelson

Many consider “True Detective” one of the best shows ever made after its first season. While the next four seasons offered some highlights, none matched the brilliance of Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, and creator Nic Pizolatto. Fans have long hoped that, if the series were ever revived, it would be with the original cast. And now, that dream might not be as far off as it seems.

Excitement builds ‘True Detective’ reunion

In an interview with NME, McConaughey addressed the possibility of reuniting with Harrelson and whether Pizolatto had already reached out. The show’s creator has admitted he’s been thinking about it.

“We’re pretty excited about the idea, but there’s no script yet. When I read the original ‘True Detective’ script and everything Rust Cohle said… it was fire. It was so good that a sequel would have to take it a step further. We’re all thrilled by the idea, but for now it’s just an idea. However, if Nic writes something that Woody or I think is really good, saying no wouldn’t even be an option. We’d read it and feel like it has to happen. But it has to be genuinely great because we set an incredible standard.”

A new chapter... with Nicolas Cage?

While Pizolatto works on a script that can meet those high expectations, HBO is moving forward with a fifth season of “True Detective.” Following the success of season four, “Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster, all signs point to Nicolas Cage taking the lead. Though his casting isn’t official yet, McConaughey is among the first to endorse the idea.

“He’s a fantastic actor, and I’d love to see him in that world,” McConaughey said. It could be a thrilling appetizer before the original cast eventually returns.
