De Niro and other stars turned down this film for being ‘offensive’—now it’s considered a cult classic
The best movie for those who prefer dark humor to the Christmas spirit, this is the story behind ‘Bad Santa’ and how it almost didn’t get made at all.

When we think of Christmas movies, the last thing that comes to mind is an alcoholic, rude, and criminally minded Santa Claus. Yet that is exactly what Bad Santa delivered in 2003—a dark comedy that broke every genre convention and nearly never made it to the screen.
Producer Bob Weinstein, brother of Harvey Weinstein, was captivated by the script, but Hollywood was far less enthusiastic. “It was the most disgusting, vile, misogynistic, anti-Christmas, and anti-child-friendly thing we could imagine,” Universal reportedly told him. “That’s why I bought it,” Weinstein has always joked.
Even with the Coen brothers on board as producers, the lead role proved notoriously difficult to cast. A string of Hollywood legends—including Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Bill Murray, Sean Penn, and Nicolas Cage—turned it down. James Gandolfini, for whom the character had originally been written, also said no.
Eventually, Billy Bob Thornton accepted the challenge. Just a few pages of the script were enough to convince him. His portrayal of the most politically incorrect Santa in cinematic history turned the film into an unexpected hit. While critics were divided, audiences embraced it as a new kind of Christmas classic—for adults.
